How to Test Your Vision with an Iowa Driver’s License

If you have an Iowa Driver’s License you can quickly test your vision.

First hold your license 16 inches away from your eyes.  This is usually a comfortable reading distance.  If you wear glasses for reading (bifocals or reading glasses), you should be wearing your glasses.

If you can read “IOWA” on the top your vision is at least the equivalent of 20/160 on a standard vision chart.

If you can read your name and address your vision is at least the equivalent of 20/50 on a standard vision chart.

If you can read the smallest letters at the bottom, your vision is at least the equivalent of 20/32 on a standard vision chart.

Thanks to Brian Kirshling OD, Erin Shriver, MD and Mark Wilkinson, OD for developing this quick vision test!
